There is something undeniably joyful about Pride; the colours, the celebrations, the music, the laughter, the sense of belonging. Pride is often described as a celebration, but at its heart it is also something deeper: a recognition of the courage it takes to become fully ourselves.
For many people, that journey has not always been easy. It can involve questions, uncertainty, discovery, growth, and sometimes overcoming fear. It can mean learning to embrace parts of ourselves that we were once told to hide. It can mean finding communities where we are welcomed, valued, and loved exactly as we are.
That is why one of the symbols we have chosen to celebrate Pride at Castle Street Methodist Church is the butterfly.
A butterfly’s life is a story of transformation. It begins in one form, spends time growing and changing, and eventually emerges with wings that allow it to become something beautiful and new. It is not a transformation that happens overnight. It takes time. It takes patience. It requires space.
Perhaps that is one reason why butterflies capture our imagination so powerfully. They remind us that growth is natural. Change is natural. Becoming who we truly are is part of life itself.
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
(Psalm 139:14)
Of course, people are not butterflies. Human journeys are far more complex, unique, and deeply personal. Yet there is something profoundly hopeful in the image of a butterfly spreading its wings for the first time. It reminds us that every person deserves the opportunity to flourish.
Throughout the Bible we encounter stories of transformation. We meet people who are changed by love, by grace, by encounter, and by community. Again and again, God calls people into fuller and richer life. The story of faith is not about staying exactly as we are. It is about growth. It is about discovering who God created us to be. It is about learning to live more fully, love more deeply, and reflect God’s image more clearly.
At Castle Street Methodist Church, we are proud to be part of that journey for so many people.
We know that every person’s story is different. Some people arrive at church full of confidence. Others arrive carrying questions. Some have been part of church communities their entire lives. Others may be stepping through the doors for the very first time, unsure what they will find.
Our hope is that whoever you are, you will discover a place where you are welcomed, valued, and encouraged to grow.
That growth might look different for each of us. It might mean exploring faith for the first time. It might mean finding healing after a difficult experience. It might mean discovering new friendships and connections. It might mean learning to trust that God delights in us more than we ever imagined.
Whatever shape that transformation takes, it is a privilege to walk alongside people as they grow.
We do not claim to have all the answers. We are simply a community seeking to follow Jesus together, learning day by day what it means to love God and love our neighbours. Along the way, we celebrate the diversity of people God brings into our community. We celebrate the gifts, experiences, talents, and perspectives that each person shares. We celebrate the beauty of lives unfolding in all their uniqueness.
“There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”
(Galatians 3:28)
Pride Month gives us a wonderful opportunity to do exactly that.
It is a chance to celebrate LGBTQ+ people and their contributions to our communities, churches, families, and society. It is a chance to recognise stories of courage and resilience. It is a chance to stand alongside those who continue to seek acceptance, equality, and dignity. Most of all, it is a chance to celebrate the wonderful diversity of God’s creation.
This year, our church window has been transformed with vibrant butterfly wings, creating a colourful and joyful space for reflection, celebration, and perhaps even a few photographs.

The wings are more than just a decoration. They are a reminder that growth is possible. They are a reminder that transformation can be beautiful. They are a reminder that every person deserves the freedom to spread their wings and become who they are created to be.
And we’d love you to be part of it.
If you are passing CSMC, stop for a moment at our butterfly wing window. Stand in front of the wings, take a selfie, and share it with your friends and family. Celebrate your own journey, wherever you may be on it. Celebrate the people who have supported you along the way. Celebrate the beauty of growth, change, and becoming.
Most importantly, know that you are welcome here.
Whether you have been attending church for years or have never stepped inside one before, whether you are exploring faith, returning after time away, or simply curious about who we are, we would be delighted to meet you.
Join us during Pride Month as we celebrate God’s love for all people. Join us for worship, conversation, friendship, and community. Join us as we continue learning what it means to be a church where everyone can belong and flourish.
Because every butterfly needs space to emerge.
Every person deserves the opportunity to grow.
And every journey of transformation is worth celebrating.
Happy Pride month from all of us at Castle Street. We are proud, honoured, and grateful to be part of the journeys that bring people closer to themselves, closer to one another, and closer to God.
Come and spread your wings with pride.
